I started working on this textbook with the idea that learning can be enjoyable and useful. Being able to think critically is unfortunately something that is being emphasized less and less in schools as time goes on. I tried to put as much as possible into this book that would get students interested in the learning process. The topics were carefully chosen as topics that would get students moving around and exploring the world around them. I added interesting and very old pictures from the past that would help them connect to days gone by.

Each unit contains mini presentations and major presentations that will help students become more confident and more interested in speaking and exploring ideas that don’t get brought up enough. In the back of the book, I added a journal section, where students can express themselves freely and practice talking about ideas in the units.

The result is a book that encourages speaking, being social, and exploring and observing. It is a book about giving presentations in English, but it also expands on many other ideas. It is also a memory that people can keep with them long after the book is completed.

I hope people can use this book to capture that lost element that made learning interesting.

この教科書の制作を始めました。私が大切にしたのは、「学ぶことは楽しくて、意味のあるものであるべきだ」という考えです。残念ながら、近年の教育現場では“考える力”の育成がどんどん軽視されつつあります。だからこそ私は、この本の中にできるだけ多くの「学ぶことの面白さ」を詰め込みました。

各ユニットのテーマは、生徒たちが周囲の世界に目を向け、自ら動き出すような内容を厳選しました。また、昔の風景や人々の生活を感じられるような、印象的で古い写真も数多く収録しています。そうすることで、現在と過去がつながり、より深い学びが生まれると考えています。

本書には、短いスピーチから本格的なプレゼンテーションまで、さまざまなアウトプット活動が組み込まれています。話すことへの自信を育み、普段あまり語られないテーマについて考え、話すきっかけにもなるはずです。巻末には自由に書けるジャーナルセクションも用意しました。学んだこと、自分の考え、感じたことなどを自由に表現できる場です。

この本は、ただの英語プレゼンテーション教材ではありません。人と話すこと、考えること、観察すること、社会とつながること――そうした「生きた学び」を大切にした、ひとつの“記憶”でもあります。授業が終わったあとも、ずっと手元に残しておけるような一冊を目指しました。

この本を通して、かつて学ぶことが面白かったあの感覚を、もう一度取り戻してもらえたら嬉しいです。
